Anxiety and Depression ~ Two Sides of the Same Coin
by Yosef Pollack, L.Ac.

The modern world we live in is wonderful. We have all the comforts and technology available to us on a scale human beings have never before imagined. However, we also experience more anxiety and depression. The two seem to go hand in hand with our modern world, and as our lives become more complex, these two enemies keep haunting us.

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine see body and mind as a whole organism.  It works on correcting imbalances. It views imbalance as the cause of both of these conditions, hence they are “two sides of the same coin.” By restoring balance and harmony the traditional Chinese way, we successfully resolve these problems.

How Anxiety and Depression Are Two Sides of the Same Problem

Anxiety and depression are two natural reactions that people have to the stresses of everyday life. If you suffer from either of these, you are far from alone. It’s estimated that depression affects 1 in 5 people, and the numbers for anxiety are even higher. Anxiety is simply when your “fight or flight” reaction kicks into high gear and doesn’t let go. It is the result of too much stress.

These days, people are looking for healthier and more natural treatments for these conditions. Nobody wants to be drugged into feeling better; they increasingly prefer deep breathing exercises, meditation, dietary modification and acupuncture to ease the symptoms. These methods work even better long term and do not carry the risk of side effects.

Acupuncture and TCM Solutions

The first step is the diagnosis. A traditional Chinese medical diagnosis is different from the western approach. It looks for disharmony in the body, which can be a sign of disharmony in the mind. The doctor looks at organs, tissue, blood, fluids and the flow of energy through the body. By checking this, they can decide which of the 365 acupoints can relieve the blockage and get it flowing right again.

Does it sound a little out there to you? If so, then consider this: Studies have shown that acupuncture produces results for those who suffer from anxiety or depression. The western medical explanation is that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system, which then releases chemicals in the brain that make you feel better and give you relief.

But here is one thing to keep in mind – simply getting acupuncture done usually isn’t the only solution. It provides relief, but what it doesn’t do is remove the things in your life that are causing anxiety and depression. Traditional Chinese medicine usually prescribes all-natural herbs to go with your treatment, as well as changes in lifestyle. Anxiety and depression can be caused by the foods we eat or by our lifestyles, which may be out of balance. You should always seek to identify and remove the cause of your problems, as well as get acupuncture treatment.

With anxiety, stress and depression problems, acupuncture is like an all-natural alternative to the psychoactive drugs your doctor may prescribe. It gives you the relief you need without the side effects, hangovers or risk of addiction. Think of it as a safer, healthier alternative!
